Statement by FCM president Berry Vrbanovic following speech by NDP Leader Nycole Turmel at today's FCM Advocacy Days' Board of Directors luncheon (30/11/2011)

The following statement was released today by FCM president Berry Vrbanovic following speech by NDP Leader Nycole Turmel at today's FCM Advocacy Days' Board of Directors luncheon in Ottawa:

"Today NDP Leader Nycole Turmel addressed Canada's municipal leaders for the first time. We look forward to working with Ms. Turmel to continue the strong relationship FCM had with the NDP under her predecessor, our friend and former President, the Honourable Jack Layton.

Ms. Turmel talked about the critical role municipalities play in our economy and the fiscal challenges they face. Municipalities are responsible for half of Canada's public infrastructure, but collect just 8 cents out of every tax dollar paid in Canada. As Ms. Turmel said today, the federal government's new, long-term infrastructure plan must provide long-term investments to build the safe and efficient community infrastructure Canada needs to drive its economy and protect its quality of life.

We also welcome Ms. Turmel's call for continued partnership with municipalities."
