This award recognizes a program or a project that focuses on reducing, diverting or managing solid waste in an innovative manner and that could be replicated by other municipalities. Ineligible projects include: waste management plans, landfill management, and the construction of transfer stations.

Examples of eligible initiatives include:

  • Reuse or recycling programs or centres
  • Composting or other biological waste management measures
  • Landfill gas capture
  • Waste diversion programs, or projects that use waste as a resource
  • Initiatives to support and foster circular economy at the local or regional level

Winners in each category are automatically eligible for FCM’s Inspire Award. Check out the 2018 Inspire Award winner, a bus orientation program that significantly improved transit ridership in the City of Kingston, ON.
