In 2024, FCM updated its by-laws (article 3.00) to introduce staggered two-year terms for board directors, beginning with the 2025 AGM. A two-year term allows directors more time to familiarize themselves with board business and policy, while staggered terms ensure there is continuity from year to year.

Note: these changes only apply to directors; table officers will continue to serve one-year terms.

What does this mean for this year’s elections?

To complete the transition into this new schedule, the 2026 FCM elections will be held as follows:

  • The Prairies and Territories and Quebec regions will vote for directors to serve a two-year term, ending in 2028.
  • British Columbia, Ontario and the Atlantic region will not be voting this year, with one exception.
    • Newfoundland and Labrador will hold a by‑election for one (1) director to complete the remainder of the two‑year term ending in 2027.

How will this impact members going forward?

As of this year’s AGM, the two-year terms will be fully implemented and the staggered cycle will commence. This means that British Columbia, Ontario and Atlantic hold regular elections in odd-numbered years, while Prairies and Territories and Quebec elections are held in even-numbered years. By-elections for vacant seats in other provinces may also take place during the annual election cycle.
