North Cowichan falls within the Coast Salish Traditional Territory on Vancouver Island. It has a population of 29,676 people spread across five communities: Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay and the South End (the area surrounding the City of Duncan, including University Village).
It has a beautifully relaxed and active lifestyle largely in a rural setting, and also offers many of the amenities of city life. Its economy boasts a growing labour force and internationally acclaimed specialists in food, technology and design. North Cowichan is known for its outdoor recreation, artisanal offerings, local food and beverages and stunning oceanfront. This 'community of communities' has been a treasure for residents and visitors since its incorporation in 1873.
