Municipalities are the engine of Canada’s economic strength – driving growth, productivity and jobs. Amid the current economic tensions between Canada and the United States and a potential tariff war, the prosperity of our communities now and into the future is critical.

As we navigate this difficult period, we must take the measures that ensure a stronger Canada emerges from this crisis. That means prioritizing economic diversification, breaking down interprovincial trade barriers stifling economic opportunity, prioritizing trade-enabling infrastructure like ports, roads and bridges and recognizing real economic growth is built by investing in communities, both urban and rural.

Additionally, FCM is calling all orders of government to accelerate and increase investment in growth sustaining infrastructure, such as water systems, roads, public transit and adaptation to climate change. Investing in a Municipal Growth Framework and public infrastructure is a straightforward way to create local jobs and enable the economic growth and diversification we need to see across the country.
