FCM President Clark Somerville issued the following statement in response to the January 29 multiple shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City.

Like most Canadians, I am horrified by last night's shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City. On behalf of municipalities from coast to coast to coast, I offer sincere condolences to the families, friends and neighbours of those community members whose lives have been stolen-and heartfelt hopes for a quick recovery to all of those injured and affected.

As human beings, we are shaken. As Canadian municipal leaders, we are determined to continue building communities grounded in tolerance and diversity. Today, we are sending a clear message: Whatever your faith, ethnicity, cultural background, sexual orientation or gender identity, you are welcome here. You are welcome here because this is your country.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of municipal government, with nearly 2,000 members representing 91 per cent of the Canadian population.
