FCM President Vicki-May Hamm issued this statement following the Prime Minister’s announcement that Gas Tax Fund transfers will double this year.
“The Federation of Canadian Municipalities welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement today that federal Gas Tax Fund transfers will see a one-time doubling this year.
“The Gas Tax Fund is the long-term, predictable federal funding stream that local governments rely on to deliver thousands of infrastructure projects each year. For communities of all sizes, growing this transfer means better roads, bridges, transit, and more.
“Above all, what the Gas Tax Fund enables is a more direct relationship between municipalities and the federal government—which means Canadians see results at the local level more efficiently and effectively than ever.
“This is what local governments do best: deliver community-focused, cost effective solutions that build better lives for Canadians.
“FCM will continue to work with the federal government to ensure this expansion of the Gas Tax Fund maximizes how municipalities are able to deliver quickly and efficiently at the local level.”
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of local government, with nearly 2,000 member municipalities representing more than 90 per cent of the Canadian population.
