The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is pleased to announce six First Nation - municipal community partnerships that will work to jointly develop solid waste management service agreements.
Under the umbrella of FCM's Community Infrastructure Partnership Project (CIPP), municipalities will work with adjacent First Nation communities to address common challenges or issues.
Funded by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada through the First Nations Waste Management Initiative, the project will provide participants with facilitation, tools and capacity building services to develop solid waste service agreements. Participating communities selected for this initiative include:
- Onigaming First Nation and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Township, ON
- Constance Lake First Nation and the Town of Hearst, ON
- Alderville First Nation and Northumberland County, ON
- Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, Henvey Inlet First Nation and the Municipality of Killarney, ON
- Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation, the Rural municipality of Duck Lake No. 463, the Town of Waldheim and the Town of Rosthern, SK
- Huu-ay-aht First Nation and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, BC
The participating communities were chosen from among 35 applications representing more than 70 communities across Canada. Selected communities will work together for eighteen months between 2016 and 2018 to enhance their relationship and to implement joint sustainable solid waste management services.

Pilot-Project in Manitoba
FCM is also working in collaboration with the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) on a pilot-project to build regional capacity to deliver the Community Infrastructure Partnership Project for solid waste management in Manitoba. They will jointly support five First Nation - municipal partnerships which will include the following:
- Rolling River First Nation, Keeseekoowenin First Nation, the Municipality of Clanwilliam-Erickson, the Municipality of Harrison Park and Riding Mountain National Park
- Dauphin River First Nation and the Rural municipality of Grahamdale
- Cross Lake First Nation and the Incorporated Community of Cross Lake
- Opaskwayak Cree Nation, the Town of The Pas and a group of up to 18 additional communities
