OTTAWA - Statement from the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on the announcement today by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship:

"We agree with the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Refugees; Canada needs to welcome refugees not only with a smile, but also with a roof over their head. The housing affordability crisis in our cities and communities is very real and growing. Today's announcement of new funding earmarked for shelter, among other things, is a step in the right direction. It acknowledges that refugees will face the same stresses many families currently face finding affordable housing. Getting it right for these refugees and investing in more social and affordable housing now will help all Canadians in the long run. We will continue to work closely with the government on this file to ensure refugees and municipalities are set up for success."

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of municipal government. In leading the municipal movement, FCM works to align federal and local priorities, recognizing that strong hometowns make for a strong Canada!
