NIAGARA REGION, ON - The following statement was released today by Claude Dauphin, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), following today's speech by Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport at FCM´s annual conference:

"On behalf of FCM's nearly 2000 municipal members, we want to thank Minister Raitt for her commitment to working with local governments on rail safety and achieving great results together after a challenging year in transportation.

Minister Raitt was very receptive to the input from FCM's National Municipal Rail Safety Working Group and the new safety measures announced recently respond directly to our call for concrete action. They represent another major step forward in improving the safety of Canada's railways and the communities around them.

We heard from Minister Raitt about investing in Canada's hometowns being one of the smartest ways to build our country and drive the economy. That is why the federal government needs to show leadership on the New Building Canada Fund application process so municipalities can apply immediately and get shovels into the ground this construction season, as promised.

We're committed to continuing our work with Minister Raitt and the federal government on rail safety and other national priorities. Together we must continue building a partnership so we can keep on delivering better results for Canadians."
