Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant

Government of British Columbia

The B.C. Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program offers two grant options for Indigenous governments and local governments, including municipalities, regional districts, and Islands Trust. Eligible governments may apply for active transportation infrastructure funding if projects satisfy the following criteria 1) previously funded active transportation projects (formerly BikeBC) awarded on or before 2018/2019 are complete by the time of the application submission, 2) project is part of an active transportation network plan or equivalent, 3) project can begin construction once provincial funding has been announced, 4) projects will be completed by March 2021 (projects under $1 million) or by March 2022 (projects over $1 million), and 5) projects are open to the public.

Government of British Columbia

The B.C. Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program offers two grant options for Indigenous governments and local governments, including municipalities, regional districts, and Islands Trust. Network planning grants help communities develop active transportation network plans to support active transportation for all ages and abilities. Eligible governments may apply if 1) their community has a population under 25,000 and 2) their community Active Transportation Network Plan is over 5 years old or non-existent.

The program has three funding streams - operations and maintenance (O&M), minor capital (for projects under $1.5 million) and major capital (for projects over $1.5 million).

This funding helps Canadian cities and communities of all sizes pilot environmental projects that reduce GHG emissions and protect the air, water, or land. This funding is designed to accommodate transformative, best-in-class municipal projects, meaning they’re highly innovative and impactful. Signature initiatives do not have pre-set environmental targets/thresholds because the projects are unique and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. We prefer projects that have built-in mechanisms to encourage replication and widespread adoption (e.g., innovative business models, partnership models, new financing mechanisms). Combined loan and grant funding for capital projects that reduce or avoid fossil fuel use in any vehicle that delivers municipal services.
