Adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change requires a plan. This guide, prepared by the Government of Nova Scotia, provides a step-by-step approach to help municipalities prepare municipal climate change action plans.

Use this guide to:

  • Learn the difference between climate change adaptation and mitigation and how to address both of them in your planning
  • Understand the specific problems that climate change presents to municipalities and find realistic approaches to dealing with them
  • Identify your municipality’s priorities and see how to address them in a detailed plan
  • Learn about sources of funding that can help with the costs of developing a municipal climate change action plan

The guide includes a template for preparing a municipal climate change action plan as well as glossaries, guidelines and other tools and resources.

This guide is designed for municipal staff who are responsible for developing and refining climate change action plans. Although it was developed for Nova Scotia municipalities, much of the information in the guide will be of use to all Canadian municipalities.
