Throughout the last year, COVID-19 has forced cities to revaluate how they function. But as Canada begins to emerge from this pandemic, the time for ambitious city-building is now. While cities continue to respond to the ongoing needs within their communities, intensification and urban density remain at the heart of planning resilient and inclusive neighbourhoods. The pandemic has directly impacted daily life and services in cities, and urban leaders are looking toward solutions and the future of city planning.

FCM’s Urban Project brought together city leaders, policy experts and the federal government to discuss the future of cities following COVID-19. The roundtable discussed a variety of opportunities and challenges, including the importance of combatting climate change and preparing for the future of work in the post-pandemic era.

A continuous theme throughout the discussions was the need for systematic change to address the inequities that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed.
