Harold Usher is City Councillor in London, Ontario. He is the first person of African/Caribbean/Latin American heritage elected to London City Council, currently serving his fifth term. His life's Mission is to 'inspire and empower individuals to better their personal disposition.' A graduate Engineer of currently Concordia University in Montreal, he worked for Bell (Canada) for 24 years. He is ardent advocate for human rights and social justice issues.
A past member of the JCI (Jaycees) and now 33rd year as a member of Toastmasters, Harold served on the Board of Governors of Fanshawe College, London Library Board, London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee, London and District Distress Centre, the Racial Justice and Gender Justice Advisory Committee of the United Church of Canada, as well as Board of Directorsof: London Multicultural Youths Association; Goodwill Industries — Ontario Great Lakes; Toastmasters International; and Elgin, Middlesex, Oxford Workforce Planning and Development.
He currently serves on the City of London: Strategic Priorities & Policy Committee; Community and Protective Services Committee; and Corporate Services Committee; as well as the Dearness Home Committee of Management; the Rapid Transit Implementation Working Group; Waste Management Working Group; Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System Joint Board of Management; and The International Board of Directors of The Consortium for Belizean Development. He has been an FCM Standing Committee Member since 2002 and a Board member from 2011-2016 and again since February 2017 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy.
Harold has been the recipient of several honours and awards, including: the Canada 125th Commemorative Medal; the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal; The Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) Designation from Toastmasters International; the Toastmasters International President's Citation; the joint Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) Citizenship Award; the London (Ontario) Black Community Achievement Award; The Toronto Ethnic Pride News Magazine African Canadian Achievement Award (ACAA) for "Excellence in Politics;" The London Latino Man of the Year; and others.
Harold is the owner and President of "Adventures in . . ." SEMINARS & SPEECHES, a company that offers high impact human resources development training to organizations and individuals, for learning, leading and performing in the workplace. His workshops include training in Improving Communication skills, Leadership skills, Interpersonal Relations, Time Management, Networking and Team Building.
Harold is a prostate cancer survivor (2000), a heart attack survivor (2002) and a colon cancer survivor (2011). He is Co-Author of the easy-to-read, informative, inspiring, patient-friendly, book, entitled "PROSTATE! PROSTATE! PROSTATE! A Problem of Men," in collaboration with his renowned urologist, Dr. Joseph Chin, in which he tells his story and what he learned, encouraging men to get a regular medical check-up and to take action quickly when they are diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Harold is well known for his "fairness," "compassion," "integrity" and "Positive Mental Attitude." He is an excellent role-model who serves as 'mentor' to several people, inspiring them to "tap their full potential" and preparing them to "become leaders for a world beyond tomorrow."
