Joanne Vanderheyden

I am seeking nomination to the Board member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. It has been an honour to serve on the board and committees for the past three years. I have learned an incredible amount about the issues that weight on our communities and thoroughly enjoy the discussions and the lobbying working on your behalf.

Strathroy-Caradoc is the municipality where I was born, raised, attended school, work, go to church, married and raised a family. Interestingly enough I have five brothers and sisters and we all still live here, which in this global world is quite unique.

As a lifelong resident of our municipality I have had many opportunities to volunteer. Having been involved as member and then leader of the Ontario 4-H Program, and also of a young women's program run from The Christian Reformed Church I had the opportunity to hone my leadership skills. This led me to two terms on Strathroy Recreation Board which instilled in me a desire to run for council.

In 1994 I was elected a councillor for Strathroy, followed by four terms as Deputy Reeve/Deputy Mayor and in 2010 Mayor, which is the post I currently hold. I have listed below some of the major organizations that I have had the privilege of serving on.

In 2006 as Warden of Middlesex County I had the opportunity to attend the FCM Conference and when I reported back to council I suggested we should become a member. Since that time I have attended numerous Conferences and gotten to know more about the scope of work FCM does on behalf of its membership. As a member of the board and working on committees I have advocated strongly on the issues that we all face and ask for your support to carry on this important work.

As a board member I will commit to helping build on FCM's strengths and communicate to our members the value FCM provides and the strength we garner by working together. I would like to be part of a strong team that achieves progress towards our shared goals and objectives.

If you have questions or concerns feel free to call me or e-mail.
