Green Champion Award – Municipal
City of Yellowknife, NT
The City of Yellowknife is an inspiration. The city has accomplished a great deal in the past several years toward its sustainability goals, translating knowledge gained from a variety of learning opportunities into concrete action. We are proud to have provided some of those opportunities through the Green Municipal Fund.
With plans and projects in energy, waste, water, and sustainable community planning, Yellowknife has shown what a strong community vision and leadership can do — and with projects that would seem impossible in a location with such a harsh climate. The city joined FCM and ICLEI's Partners for Climate Protection program in 1998 and has earned all five corporate and community milestones. In 2011, the city won an FCM Sustainable Communities Award for its Smart Growth Development Plan. And in 2013, the city won another Sustainable Communities Award for its centralized composting pilot project. What does the future hold for Yellowknife? A bigger composting facility, a larger organics collection program, a new residential curbside organics collection program and much more.

He also led the development of a number of community improvement plans (CIPs), including the development of a CIP for the 18-kilometre Junction Creek Waterway Park and Sudbury's Brownfield CIP, which earned the city a 2013 FCM Sustainable Communities Award in the brownfields category.
