Canada by the Book

We will continue our Canada by the Book legacy project at the November board meeting in Ottawa. Please support this initiative by bringing a child’s book written by an author from your community or one nearby.

The books will be collected at the meeting and donated to a school in a selected member municipality.

About the project
The project was piloted at the September 2013 FCM board meeting in St. John’s, NL, and collected 74 books from various regions in Canada for donation to a local elementary school.

The initiative was so well received it was formalized as the Canada by the Book legacy project — encouraging our board members to bring a children’s book by an author from their community to each FCM meeting.

The books are then donated to a school or local library in the host community. For meetings held in Ottawa, there is a raffle to select a recipient in a rural community unable to host FCM events.

Since 2013, FCM’s board members have donated over 1,100 books ― valued at almost $19,000 ― to libraries in:

  • St John’s, NL
  • Upper Miramachi, NB
  • Thunder Bay, ON
  • Burnaby, BC
  • Beaver Creek, AB
  • Fredericton, NB
  • Sageunay, QC
  • Battleford, SK
  • Sherbrooke, QC
  • Halton Hills, ON
  • Yellowhead, MB
  • Whistler, BC
  • Kaslo, BC
  • Fort McMurray, AB
  • Dawson, YK
