Statement by FCM President Raymond Louie on the federal election results (20/10/2015)
I want to congratulate the Liberal Party of Canada on its significant accomplishment in yesterday's federal election. As President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), I look forward to building a productive relationship with the Liberal government and working closely with them in the months to come.
I also congratulate the Conservative Party of Canada, the New Democratic Party of Canada, the Green Party of Canada, and the Bloc Québecois for their efforts in this historic campaign.
This election was a defining moment for the millions of Canadians who live in cities and communities across this great country, as we witnessed unprecedented emphasis on municipal priorities that affect the day-to-day lives of Canadians. From improving infrastructure and public transit, to improving access to affordable housing and broadband internet for rural communities, the parties recognized that the best way to bolster the economy and create a strong vibrant future for our country is to work with local governments.
During the campaign, the Liberal party promised to increase infrastructure spending by $59.1 billion over a 10-year period. Their platform proposes significant investments in public transit, climate change, infrastructure and affordable housing. These commitments will create jobs, strengthen the economy and improve quality of life for all Canadians.
FCM looks forward to working in partnership with the newly elected Liberal government. We are ready to work together to see election promises come to life, and to create and implement the policies and programs necessary to bolster strong and vibrant municipalities that are the engine for a strong Canadian economy.
