Statement on Throne Speech (04/12/2015)
Statement from Raymond Louie, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities following the Speech from the Throne:
"I want to congratulate the federal government on its first Speech from the Throne. The Speech signals the time has come for all orders of government to roll up their sleeves and begin the work of turning commitments into real wins for Canadians. I am very pleased the government reiterated its commitment to strengthen the economy and improve quality of life through investments in transit, green infrastructure and social infrastructure. This is good news for all Canadians. The government's plan puts people and families first as these are proven job creators that grow the economy and protect the environment. Partnership with municipalities will be essential to the success of this ambitious plan and we are ready to get to work with the federal government on these priorities.
This year, FCM passed resolutions calling on the federal government to respond to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and to launch an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. We commend the government's commitment to act on both these profoundly important issues."
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of municipal government. In leading the municipal movement, FCM works to align federal and local priorities, recognizing that strong hometowns make for a strong Canada.
