Local governments are key to Canada’s future: NDP leader (24/11/2016)
FCM President Clark Somerville issued this statement following dialogue with the Honourable Tom Mulcair, Leader of Canada's NDP, at FCM's Board of Directors meeting in Ottawa.
Municipal leaders welcomed NDP Leader Tom Mulcair's strong support for Canada's cities and communities in his speech today to FCM's Board of Directors in Ottawa. Mr. Mulcair's remarks reflected the importance of investing in the places where we live, work and raise our families.
FCM works closely with Canada's opposition parties to keep local priorities high on the national agenda. The NDP has long been an effective partner for the municipal sector, advocating for locally-driven and widely-shared prosperity, and raising awareness on key issues like affordable housing and public transit. I look forward to strengthening our partnership even further.
Phase 2 of the federal infrastructure plan is an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen Canada by strengthening our communities. Long-term public investments in public infrastructure create lasting public value - including jobs, productivity, emission reductions and more livable communities. Mr. Mulcair underlined this point vividly, and we strongly agree.
In his words today: "The talent and ingenuity of our municipal leaders is remarkable. You are growing local economies by investing in world-class infrastructure and transit. You are leading the way on tackling climate change and mitigating its effects. And you are finding innovative solutions to create a better future for every person in every region of this country...We will work with you to keep the priorities of Canadians front and centre in Ottawa."
Together with the NDP - and with all of Canada's federal parties - FCM and municipal leaders will continue working to build a prosperous and sustainable future.
Clark Somerville is President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and a local/regional councillor for the Town of Halton Hills and Halton Region. FCM is the national voice of local government, with nearly 2,000 members representing 90 per cent of Canada's population.
