FCM’s Sustainable Communities Conference: Where innovation meets action (09/02/2018)

Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) President Jenny Gerbasi issued this statement after FCM's Sustainable Communities Conference was held in Ottawa.

"Hundreds of local leaders from across Canada gathered at the Sustainable Communities Conference (SCC) to demonstrate how local governments are delivering some of Canada's most innovative green solutions. With influence over half of the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, local governments are key to meeting Canada's climate goals. This year's conference provided the perfect venue to demonstrate how municipalities can help our country reach those goals.

"Canadian municipalities are recognized globally as leaders in sustainability who are well placed to share insights and best practices with their counterparts. We are working hard to build sustainable communities—with cleaner air, soil and water; more resilience to weather extremes; lower GHG emissions and a higher quality of life. This year's FCM Sustainable Communities Award winners embody those principles of sustainability and collaboration. Moreover, they exemplify how municipal innovation can have transformational national and international impacts.

"Conference delegates were pleased to hear the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, emphasize the critical role that municipalities play in delivering results on climate action including through federal investments in local sustainable infrastructure.

"Local governments are driving some of Canada's most innovative green solutions—from building retrofits to better transit, from brownfield recovery to efficient waste systems. With the federal government allocating more than $20 billion to green infrastructure projects over the next decade, we have the potential to turn local innovation into nationwide action. Scaling up that local innovation is the key to tackling our national climate challenges and, as demonstrated at the SCC this week, starts with sharing best practices."

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of municipal governments, with close to 2,000 members representing more than 90 per cent of the Canadian population.
