Through this pilot project, Canadian municipal experts supported two medium-size cities in Vietnam, Hoi An and Bac Giang, as they implement innovative solid waste management solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The focus was on reducing short-lived climate pollutants, which include methane and other greenhouse gases in ways that can eventually be replicated in other municipalities across Vietnam.

In Hoi An, where the landfill had reached its capacity and posed a safety hazard, Canadian experts helped introduce environmental mitigation measures such a leachate control, gas capture, water purification and public space beautification.

VnSWM also led education campaigns and training, which encouraged more people taking part in domestic waste management to separate their organics from the main waste stream, which reduced methane levels and increased composting volumes. This assisted with gardening and the production of enzymes that can be used for household cleaning.

We thank the municipal experts of Nanaimo (BC) and Shuswap Regional District (BC) for their participation.
