The Federation of Canadian Municipalities commissioned an environmental scan in 2022 to highlight various gender-responsive and inclusive approaches being used, or developed, by municipalities across Canada.
The purpose of this research was to showcase some meaningful and practical ways that municipalities, regardless of their size or history in working towards gender equity, can support the direct engagement and leadership of women and gender diverse individuals in local government. Additional analysis was conducted to further categorize findings and identify trends and themes to help municipal stakeholders make sense of the rich information gathered.
The three documents linked on this page share the findings from that environmental scan, in three different formats:
- A summary of findings, grouped by various stages of municipal policy and programming, and by theme, to enable readers to identify an array of actions they can take at different stages of implementation.
- An annotated list of gender-responsive and inclusive approaches, which presents more than 130 initiatives categorized by types of resources (strategies, governance bodies, capacity development, workplace/employee policies, data gathering, community programs, budgets and press/media).
- Themes and trends in municipal strategies regarding gender equity and inclusion, from eight Canadian municipalities who have or are in the process of developing gender-responsive strategies.
Research and analysis were conducted by Seasonova, with additional contributions from Ali McLean.
