OTTAWA, ON - "Ordinary people, extraordinary actions", that's what makes Morag Schonken proud of her hometown of Pierson, Manitoba and the grand prize winner of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) Hometown Proud contest.

In November 2014 FCM launched a campaign asking Canadians to showcase their hometown pride. Through stories and photos, Canadians from coast to coast to coast shared their pride in what makes their hometowns special. The campaign kicked-off with a contest where, through the support of Air Canada, the winner of the contest won two tickets to fly their loved ones home.

"Canadians know what makes their cities, towns, and villages work best, and what they need to raise their family, work, and be involved in community life," said Brad Woodside, President of FCM. "Sharing these stories is an important way to remind us of the critical role our hometowns play the overall strength of our country."

"I am so happy to have had the opportunity to share the love of my hometown not just within in my region but to the whole country," said Ms. Schonken. "Volunteers are the heart of my hometown and together we have built a true community."

FCM believes that the next federal election must focus on strengthening Canada through strengthening our cities and communities. Hometowns are where Canadians live, work and raise their families - they drive our economy and contribute to a strong Canada.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of municipal government representing 90 per cent of Canada's municipal population.
