FCM President Jenny Gerbasi issued the following statement following the passage of Quebec's Bill 122: An Act Mainly to Recognize that Municipalities are Local Governments and to Increase Their Autonomy and Powers.

"Following the passage of Bill 122, I would like to congratulate our provincial colleagues, the Union des municipalités du Québec and the Fédération québécoise des municipalités, for their hard work in helping to make this bill a reality. The passage of Bill 122 is a significant step forward for the municipal sector in Quebec that can inspire progress in other jurisdictions.

With this bill's passage, the Government of Quebec recognizes the new relationships and responsibilities that local governments have in the 21st century. Municipalities manage most of Canada's public infrastructure and deliver a widening range of services to support economic growth and a high quality of life. Providing municipalities with greater flexibility and more tools to meet residents' needs will enable economic, social, and environmental progress."

Jenny Gerbasi is the Deputy Mayor for the City of Winnipeg. Her one-year term as FCM President began on June 4, 2017.
