OTTAWA- The following statement was released today by the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Brad Woodside on the recent floods in several communities of Manitoba and Saskatchewan:

"The thoughts and prayers of municipal leaders across Canada are with the residents of communities facing these terrible floods, as they work to protect their homes and livelihoods. I take heart in knowing that local officials and emergency response teams are on the ground, providing care and leadership in this time of need.

Reducing the impact of flooding and other extreme weather events remains a top priority for municipalities across the country. The rising costs of adapting local infrastructure and disaster management represent a growing burden to property taxpayers, including homeowners and small businesses.

All orders of government must continue working together on adaptation and disaster mitigation strategies that address the challenges facing our cities and communities in this changing climate."
