Community Energy Planning Mission in British Columbia

August 17-22, 2008

Seeing is believing

From August 17 to August 22, 2008, a delegation of municipal decision-makers visited leading sustainable community development projects in British Columbia on the FCM Sustainable Communities Mission. The delegation toured sites in Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler, Sidney, and Victoria.

Delegates saw sustainable green buildings and neighborhoods - many of them supported by FCM's Green Municipal FundTM (GMF) - and learned how to encourage sustainability in their own communities. They also received technical information on sustainable energy and water management facilities. "I'm so excited about going back and sharing ideas," said Frances Caldarelli, a city councillor from Sudbury, Ontario.

"Sustainability is part of our lives," said Mission delegate Jean Tremblay, mayor of Saguenay, Québec. "We have to always think of it whenever we do projects. I intend to work more "on sustainability" when I'm in my ward. I know it's possible; I have seen lots of models that we can replicate. It will change the way we work."
