Markham, Ontario – Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, visited Markham District Energy—the city’s public energy utility and Canada’s fastest growing energy utility—to highlight how federal investments are expanding Markham’s affordable, low-carbon energy network to more residents and businesses.

The Government of Canada provides $530 million to municipalities through the Green Municipal Fund to help communities adapt to climate change.

The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities today announced the Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation initiative. This $530M initiative will accelerate and scale local, equity-informed, climate adaptation action by supporting knowledge and skills development, and funding resilience planning and project implementation. This will enable local governments to build long-term resiliency to the impacts of climate change.
